Small same-design batches can make synchronized heads sit empty even when the machine has impressive nominal capacity.

The decision this scenario is actually testing

Independent machines can split different customer jobs while a synchronized bar normally wants identical work across its heads. That flexibility has economic value even when the synchronized machine wins on floor space or operator simplicity for large runs.

Before using this to buy equipment

  • Time several real jobs and replace the minutes-per-1,000-stitches assumption.
  • Measure hooping/loading time separately from sewing time.
  • Use the actual same-design batch size, not invoice quantity.
  • Add downtime, maintenance and staffing constraints that matter in your shop.
  • Run the shortest real customer deadline, not only the average week.

Questions this example should answer

Does this mean multi-head machines are bad for small shops?

No. It means batch structure matters. A shop with frequent 48- or 72-piece repeats can use synchronized heads very differently from a shop dominated by one-off names and tiny logo runs.

How do I estimate my real average batch?

Look at recent jobs and calculate the number of pieces that truly share the same design, thread setup and production sequence—not simply the total pieces on each invoice.
