What the same workload looks like on different architectures
The numbers below use the same assumptions as the main planner: 1.45 minutes per 1,000 stitches for flat goods, 2.10 for caps, 1.4 minutes handling for flats, 2.8 for caps and one operator. They are planning examples—not manufacturer ratings.

The decision this scenario is actually testing
Caps create two separate risks: sewing can slow on structured fronts and handling can rise because framing and placement are less forgiving. A machine that looks oversized on flat garments can be appropriately sized once cap work dominates the queue.
Before using this to buy equipment
- Time several real jobs and replace the minutes-per-1,000-stitches assumption.
- Measure hooping/loading time separately from sewing time.
- Use the actual same-design batch size, not invoice quantity.
- Add downtime, maintenance and staffing constraints that matter in your shop.
- Run the shortest real customer deadline, not only the average week.
Questions this example should answer
Why can 500 caps/month need more capacity than 500 shirts/month?
The model uses slower cap sewing and longer handling assumptions. Your own cap frame, cap style, digitizing and operator technique should replace those defaults.
Should I use published maximum SPM for caps?
No. Use measured production time on your actual cap jobs whenever possible. Maximum rated SPM is not the same thing as sustained cap output.
